Domain Names: Your Questions, Our Answers

Domain names like yourcompany.com make it easy for potential customers to find you on the Internet. It maps out a human-readable word or phrase (say, jonathanscafe.com) to a computer readable Internet address (called IP address) allowing your clients and visitors to view and use your website, shopping cart, and communicate with you via email. Everyone can get a domain name. While some domain types have certain conditions (.CA domains require you to be a Canadian, for example) most can be reserved by paying the corresponding registration fees, on a first-come-first-served basis. You can register most domains for up to 10 years, and then may renew them at any given time, at their then current renewal rate. To register your own domain name, simply complete a search and registration form on this very page.
Picking the right domain is a crucial step in getting your website or business online. Here are a few tips to help you pick the perfect domain:
  • Make it easy to type and easy to remember. Keep in mind that you’ll occasionally give people your domain over the phone or in person. If they can’t spell it out later, they might not find you online! Short and sweet often works best.
  • Make it Unique. Avoid confusion with your competitors, or you may accidentally end up sending them some of your business!
  • Use keywords that accurately describe your product, services, or brand. This will help your website get better rankings in search engines such as Google. Your domain could, for example, include the city that you’re operating in, one of your main products, or your brand.
  • Pick the right domain type. With over 300 new domain endings to choose from, you are now in a unique position to select a domain type that more closely describes your business. You can target clients in a geographic location (.CA or .QUEBEC), by hobby (.hockey, .soccer, .golf) or even with a bit of humor (.lol, .ninja, .wtf). By using one of the new domain types, you are also greatly increasing your chances of finding an available domain with the keywords you need.
  • Register multiple relevant domains. This could include domain misspellings, useful variants, or geographically targeted domains. And you don’t need to build separate websites for each domain: you can easily redirect them to your primary domain. Several companies choose to protect their brands by registering their domain with multiple popular domain extensions.
  • Do your research and make sure your domain choice is not copyrighted by someone else. It will help avoid costly legal issues that may cost you more than just your domain!
You can transfer any active domain to Web Hosting Canada by using our domain transfer order form. Before transferring your domain, you will need to:
  • Obtain your domain’s transfer key (also called AUTH key or EPP code). This is a password that protects your domain from being transferred without your authorization. Ask your current provider for this key, and enter it when requested during your transfer order with Web Hosting Canada.
  • Unlock your domain. Most domains will be locked with their current providers to prevent unauthorized transfer. You may be able to unlock your domain directly from your provider’s domain management portal or by contacting them directly.
  • Ensure the email address of the domain’s Administrative contact of your domain is in fact an email address that you have access to, and that any Domain Privacy is disabled. You can view your domain’s current information using any WHOIS lookup tool such as easywhois.com
This information should be requested from your current domain registrar or reseller. If you are unsure who you’ve registered your domain name with, please try to find a payment invoice with the company’s name or identify them by performing a WHOIS lookup and get in touch with them directly.

Once started, a domain transfer may take up to 5 days to complete (.CA domains generally transfer within minutes). You may be asked to confirm your request by clicking on a link that will be sent to you by email, and you will receive an email confirmation from us once the transfer has been completed. You will then be able to manage your domain and update your nameservers from your Client Area.

When you transfer your domain registration, you are also automatically adding one year to your domain’s expiration date. For example, if your domain expires in 2020, its expiry date will be in 2021 after your transfer. This ensures that you do not lose any of the time you already paid for your domain with another provider.

If you have any additional questions about your domain’s transfer, please get in touch with our friendly support team for immediate assistance.
DNS (Domain Name System) is a technology that powers the backbone of the internet, allowing the mapping of domain names to servers that hold the data of your website and email. Before someone can reach your website, they need to communicate with the DNS servers to obtain the actual location of your website’s data. Traditional DNS servers are physically located in fixed locations around the world, often thousands of kilometers from your website visitor’s location. This causes an additional delay before you or your clients can reach your website.

With Anycast DNS technology, your website’s DNS information is automatically copied to dozens of locations around the world (instead of just one), allowing your clients to automatically fetch the information from the location that’s closest to them, thus improving your website’s initial load time.

Web Hosting Canada’s Anycast DNS system has been built from the ground up with Canadians in mind, and includes 10 points of presence in Canada alone, to ensure the fastest possible domain resolution times for you and your clients. There are also points of presence in Europe, Asia, and the US, to make sure even those halfway around the world get near-instant access to your website!

Anycast DNS is included with our Canadian Web Hosting or can be activated by ordering the Domain Manager PRO addon for your domain.
Your domain names can easily be managed from your Client Area. You’ll be able to:
  • Update your nameservers
  • Manage your advanced DNS settings (A Record, CNAME, TXT and MX)
  • Update your WHOIS Contact Information
  • Manage Privacy Protection
  • Manage your Domain Lock
With the Domain Manager PRO addon, you can also take advantage of premium features:
  • Anycast DNS
  • Email forwarders
  • URL Forwarders
  • AntiSpam Rules
Here are just a few reasons:
  • Free features with every domain, including DNS Hosting, DNS Record Management and Domain Locking
  • Useful low-cost addons like Privacy Protection, Email forwarding, URL forwarding and DNS Anycast technology to speed up domain name resolution time worldwide.
  • Easily connect a new website, blog, or professional email on your new domain through our intuitive Client Area.
  • The lowest prices in the industry. Pay in Canadian dollars and save up to 40% over competitors charging in USD!
  • 24/7 assistance from real experts, by phone, email, and live chat
  • Increased trust and offered by a CIRA-accredited registrar that manages tens of thousands of domains every day.

Monitor your web performance with PHP X-Ray

Are you looking for a way to speed up your website and boost its performance?

Introducing PHP X-ray! A new performance monitoring tool you can use to identify issues and improve the performance of your website.

We are happy to announce that PHP X-ray is now available for free with all our Web Hosting and Reseller Hosting plans.

Read on to learn how this can help you…

What is PHP X-Ray?

PHP X-Ray is a tool for websites that use CMSs such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. You can use it to scan your website for issues such as resource-heavy plugins, database queries, functions, or external calls which can slow your website down.

With PHP X-Ray, you’re no longer forced to diagnose these problems by hand, as it will produce a detailed report of any performance bottlenecks at the click of a button. It’ll give recommendations on how to resolve any found issues so you can improve your website performance!

Who should use PHP X-ray?

If you have strong technical know-how and you’re looking for a way to easily diagnose issues with your website, PHP X-ray is a great solution! It’ll help you to resolve problems yourself which can save you both time and the expense of hiring a web developer.

There are a multitude of reasons why a website could be performing poorly, such as:

  • Render-blocking JavaScript code
  • Slow or outdated plugins
  • Excessive database overhead or too many queries
  • External calls to servers that are slow to respond
  • Non-optimized CSS
To learn more about common web performance issues, see What is website performance and why is it important?

When issues such as these aren’t resolved, they can negatively affect your SEO, site traffic, and eventually your business. It’s always a great idea to watch for these kinds of problems and keep your website working to its full potential.

So if you suspect your website is running slowly, why not give PHP X-Ray a try?

How can I get started?

PHP X-Ray makes finding what’s causing issues on your site very easy!

If you have a Web Hosting or Reseller Hosting plan, you can find this tool right within cPanel.

Simply log in to your cPanel, and click the PHP X-Ray App icon:

PHP Xray UI

Then click on the Start Tracing button to analyze your website:

PHP Xray UI

Make sure to add an asterisk ("*") to the 'Specify Mask' field, to scan your entire website.

After your site has been analyzed, you’ll be able to view a report detailing any found issues.

For example, if you’re running a WordPress website, PHP X-Ray might identify a plugin that uses a lot of resources. In this case, the solution would be to disable the plugin (if it's not required), and then re-run the test. You’ll see that the problem has been resolved & you’ll likely find that your website loads much faster as a result!

Note: PHP X-Ray is also available with our Dedicated Servers by purchasing the CloudLinux Shared PRO option.

In conclusion

PHP X-Ray is a very useful tool you can use to keep your website running smoothly. If you’re looking for a way to speed up your website and boost your performance — be sure to try it out for yourself!

Communication tools

Communication tools for your digital strategy

A good digital strategy involves several communication tools — also called communications channels or means of communication. And these should not be chosen at random!

So how do you choose them? First, consider a very important element: your target audience. After that, depending on your objectives and the positioning of your competitors.

Obviously, when choosing communication tools, you need to be able to optimize and, maintain them. And, above all, keep up with the rapidly changing needs of your target audience. You will likely have to give up some of these tools and adopt others along the way. Being able to use Agile Marketing for your business will benefit you.

Agile Marketing: a marketing practice that involves analyzing results and continuously improving the ways in which you achieve your goals.

In this article, we will outline the key communication tools to integrate in your strategy.

A Website: the must-have!

Let's face it: in 2023, having a website is not a luxury nor an option. It is a must!

There are so many reasons why your business needs a website. However, whether you decide to go with a simple one-page website or an online store, the most important thing is to establish a presence online and have a dedicated space for your business.

Here are the steps to create your website:

  1. Buy your domain name and choose your hosting plan (hopefully from us at WHC!)
  2. Learn how to create your website or delegate this to an expert.
  3. Improve your site’s referencing: work on SEO and open a Google Business listing.

For those who are new to this, you may be wondering what essential sections you need to include in your site. At the very least, you’ll need to have the following pages:

  • About Us: information about you and your business
  • Services/Products: what services or products do you offer?
  • Achievements: provide examples of projects you have completed for clients
  • Contact: a page with your contact information so that future clients can get in touch

So, ready to get started? WordPress or Weebly are two relatively easy-to-use CMS platforms.

A Blog

There are so many benefits to having a company blog: improving your SEO, building your reputation and expertise, increasing traffic to your site, evergreen content, etc. Do you need more convincing?

Evergreen Content: content that stands the test of time and that will not become outdated or false over the years.

SEO

After creating a website and a blog, it would be wise to invest time in SEO — Search Engine Optimization. This strategy gives your website increased visibility, along with several other benefits.

How can you improve your natural referencing? First, we suggest you develop a keyword strategy, using tools such as Google Keywords or Answerthepublic, and integrate the chosen keywords into quality content.

Obviously, many other factors can have an impact on SEO. In fact, you can evaluate your site and determine your SEO rating easily with tools such as rankingCoach. You will then have a summary of key aspects to improve and their impact on your referencing.

Oh, and one last thing: please register your business on Google My Business. It’s a very powerful tool that allows your business to appear quickly on Google Maps, while also allowing your clients to rate your business. Who hasn't checked Google reviews before ordering a pizza or looking for a marketing agency?

A Newsletter

We're not talking about bombarding your customers with a newsletter every day. But rather distribute a newsletter at reasonable intervals, allowing you to present news, offers, partnerships and, most importantly, the people in your company. Customers always appreciate seeing the people behind the project!

To get the most out of your newsletter, be sure to include clickable links: this will ensure direct traffic to your website or your sales page.

Of course, the question will always be: how do you actually get people to subscribe to your newsletter? You could create email magnets (or lead magnets) by offering useful content like free tools, or a useful guide in exchange for their email address. Or even integrate a checkbox when visitors are registering for an event or a membership. Use your imagination! Still, always be mindful of the Canadian Anti-Spam legislation, which requires you to have a person's consent in order to send them emails. Basically, you can't bombard folks with unsolicited newsletters if they haven't registered.

Want to start sending out newsletters now? Check out our MailerMojo marketing platform and connect directly with your potential customers. Try it out for free!

A Podcast

Aaaah, podcasts… everyone listens to them nowadays. Consequently, they’ve become an increasingly popular marketing strategy. A podcast is a communication tool that offers easy access: potential customers can listen to their favorite podcast while cleaning, while in traffic, on public transport, while jogging, etc. Obviously, a podcast requires some preparation, but maybe not the level of detail needed for a blog post.

Since people like to listen to other people “au naturel,” a podcast’s broad themes can be worked out without requiring that we write out the entire podcast script. There is room for flexibility, especially if you are a natural speaker.

Creating a podcast requires some technical knowledge of recording and good audio equipment. However, a good podcast will create a sense of attachment among listeners, and all the content created can be used in any of the other communication tools mentioned in this article.

So grab your mics: Spotify and Apple Podcasts are waiting for you!

Social Networks

Social networks are vital to any good content strategy, whether you like them or hate them.

You could focus your presence on one or several platforms, as there’s plenty to choose from: Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, Snapchat... Every piece of content created on these platforms is called organic content, meaning it makes its way to people naturally, according to algorithms, and without you having to spend a single cent.

Obviously, it’s best to choose only a few platforms to avoid spreading yourself too thin (and perhaps even burnout). The choice of platforms should not be made on a whim, either: you have to select the social networks where your target audience spends their time.

Here are some quick tips to make the most of your presence on social networks:

  • Optimize your platform presence: filling all sections is a must
  • Focus on quality, not quantity — nobody likes to be flooded with boring content
  • Video content is the most powerful
  • There’s a reason it’s called social networks: interacting with your community is key!
  • Consistency and flexibility: always create content calendars in advance, but remain flexible!

Ready to develop your strategy and create content?

Paid Ads (Boosted Referencing)

Paid communication tools like digital advertising or SEO could also be part of your overall strategy. Facebook Ads is one example of digital advertising. You can simply boost a publication or create an original advertising campaign. Google Ads, on the other hand, are an example of paid referencing. Surely you’ve spotted those top Google results (with the "Sponsored" label)? That could be your site up there.

What these examples have in common is that you'll have to dig out your wallet to post your ads. Of course, there's no doubt about it: right now, platforms are pushing advertising content more than organic content. This is the way they pocket some money.

Before diving into paid ads, make sure to establish a budget and perhaps consider hiring a specialized agency.

Which should you choose?

As we have just seen, you can use many communication channels. Of course, the point is not to start using them all at the once.

Before choosing where to put your efforts, make sure you have the skills for the tool you choose to undertake - or the financial resources to delegate its implementation.

Obviously, we strongly encourage you to reuse content and adapt it to other tools. And don’t forget to remain flexible: if one method doesn’t quite jive with your target audience, don’t hesitate to implement another. Test things out!

Show the World your Website is Eco-Friendly with a Green Badge

With more than 400 million active websites worldwide, data centers already generate more carbon emissions than the entire airline industry. Not to mention this footprint could grow to more than one-fifth of total global energy use by 2030, according to some estimates. Fortunately, if you host a website on WHC’s Green Web Hosting platform, your websites are powered by 100% renewable energy and are helping reduce your organization’s overall carbon footprint. Now you can proudly get the word out with your very own Green Hosting Badge.

What’s a Green Hosting Badge?

Web Hosting Canada’s Green Hosting Badge is a visual site seal that you can display on your own website to show your visitors that it’s powered by renewable energy. It’s free to use and available in multiple formats and styles for any website that’s actively using WHC’s Green Web Hosting platform. Green Hosting Badges When visitors click on the badge, they’ll see additional information that helps them understand how your website is making a difference.
Green Hosting Badge informations
The badge looks great in a website’s navigation bar, footer, sidebar, or header.

Why should I add a Green Hosting Badge to my Website?

  1. Differentiate yourself from the competition

The average visitor spends about 10 to 20 seconds on a web page, leaving little time to make a lasting impression. Our green badges quickly and visually presents your business as ecologically responsible, often setting you apart from your competitors by adding heart and soul to your business proposition.
  2. Being Green is Smart Business

Canadians (and Earth inhabitants in general!) care about the environment and can adapt their spending habits based on a vendor’s environmental impact. As such, showing your green side can help increase trust, sales, as well as secure return business.
  3. Help Increase Awareness for Greener Business Practices

Unfortunately, website visitors may not be aware of the real environmental impact a virtual web presence can have on our planet. By adding the badge to your site you help get the word out. The badge also describes how your website is green, and how they can make a difference too.

How do I get the Green Hosting Badge?

If you have a website hosted on WHC’s green hosting platform, then you’ll be able to find the badges within your Green Badges section of your WHC Client Area.
If you’re using the old version of the Client Area, use this link instead.
Simply choose the badge you’d like to use and copy its HTML code into your site, at the location where you’d like you badge shown. Need some help doing so?

You can find the instructions on how to add your green hosting badge here, or you can simply reach out to our friendly customer service team and we’ll gladly help you out!

Happy Hosting, WHC Team
