cPanel 108 logo

cPanel 108 has arrived!

If you are using any of WHC's web solutions, you are probably aware that cPanel is the tool used to manage your services behind the scenes. It is the gold standard when it comes to web hosting control panels, and we always make sure to keep you informed of new features as they are introduced.

That being said, the latest version of cPanel, version 108, has been released! Let's explore the new features and changes that come with this update.

What’s new in 108?

The latest version is packed with a range of improvements in functionality, enhancements to the user interface, and a number of notable depreciations. Let's examine the details more closely...

Functionality improvements

Roundcube changes

You can now move events from the default Roundcube calendar into a different calendar. Additionally, as Horde has been deprecated in this release, any calendar events in Horde webmail will be migrated to the default Roundcube calendar automatically.

AutoSSL updates

If you’re a server administrator, it's worth noting that the Let's Encrypt plugin now comes pre-installed in version 108. However, it will not automatically be set as your default SSL provider.

Performance upgrades

The Exim mail transfer agent has been upgraded to enhance its functionality and overall performance.

New User Interface changes

The latest version has optimized the User Interface (UI) to be more user-friendly and intuitive, letting you locate useful tools and settings with ease. Some notable changes include:

  • A feedback option has now been added to the cPanel interface. You can provide feedback (to cPanel) via the navigation bar or in the interface footer.
  • An all-new Onboarding Assistant has been created to welcome users that have updated to the Jupiter theme.
  • The ‘Paper Lantern’ theme has now been removed from all interface menu options.

Deprecated and removed items

Removal of the ‘Paper Lantern’ theme

The Paper Lantern theme has been removed from all interface menu options and is no longer available for theme selection. Any cPanel accounts using this theme will now automatically default to the Jupiter theme. And with that, Jupiter is now officially the default theme with cPanel.

Removal of Horde webmail

In version 108, the Horde webmail interface has been depreciated and removed. If you previously used Horde for your webmail, your calendars and contacts will now automatically migrate to Roundcube. We now recommend using Roundcube for your webmail. See How to use Roundcube Webmail to learn more.

Domain Names: Your Questions, Our Answers

Domain names like yourcompany.com make it easy for potential customers to find you on the Internet. It maps out a human-readable word or phrase (say, jonathanscafe.com) to a computer readable Internet address (called IP address) allowing your clients and visitors to view and use your website, shopping cart, and communicate with you via email. Everyone can get a domain name. While some domain types have certain conditions (.CA domains require you to be a Canadian, for example) most can be reserved by paying the corresponding registration fees, on a first-come-first-served basis. You can register most domains for up to 10 years, and then may renew them at any given time, at their then current renewal rate. To register your own domain name, simply complete a search and registration form on this very page.
Picking the right domain is a crucial step in getting your website or business online. Here are a few tips to help you pick the perfect domain:
  • Make it easy to type and easy to remember. Keep in mind that you’ll occasionally give people your domain over the phone or in person. If they can’t spell it out later, they might not find you online! Short and sweet often works best.
  • Make it Unique. Avoid confusion with your competitors, or you may accidentally end up sending them some of your business!
  • Use keywords that accurately describe your product, services, or brand. This will help your website get better rankings in search engines such as Google. Your domain could, for example, include the city that you’re operating in, one of your main products, or your brand.
  • Pick the right domain type. With over 300 new domain endings to choose from, you are now in a unique position to select a domain type that more closely describes your business. You can target clients in a geographic location (.CA or .QUEBEC), by hobby (.hockey, .soccer, .golf) or even with a bit of humor (.lol, .ninja, .wtf). By using one of the new domain types, you are also greatly increasing your chances of finding an available domain with the keywords you need.
  • Register multiple relevant domains. This could include domain misspellings, useful variants, or geographically targeted domains. And you don’t need to build separate websites for each domain: you can easily redirect them to your primary domain. Several companies choose to protect their brands by registering their domain with multiple popular domain extensions.
  • Do your research and make sure your domain choice is not copyrighted by someone else. It will help avoid costly legal issues that may cost you more than just your domain!
You can transfer any active domain to Web Hosting Canada by using our domain transfer order form. Before transferring your domain, you will need to:
  • Obtain your domain’s transfer key (also called AUTH key or EPP code). This is a password that protects your domain from being transferred without your authorization. Ask your current provider for this key, and enter it when requested during your transfer order with Web Hosting Canada.
  • Unlock your domain. Most domains will be locked with their current providers to prevent unauthorized transfer. You may be able to unlock your domain directly from your provider’s domain management portal or by contacting them directly.
  • Ensure the email address of the domain’s Administrative contact of your domain is in fact an email address that you have access to, and that any Domain Privacy is disabled. You can view your domain’s current information using any WHOIS lookup tool such as easywhois.com
This information should be requested from your current domain registrar or reseller. If you are unsure who you’ve registered your domain name with, please try to find a payment invoice with the company’s name or identify them by performing a WHOIS lookup and get in touch with them directly.

Once started, a domain transfer may take up to 5 days to complete (.CA domains generally transfer within minutes). You may be asked to confirm your request by clicking on a link that will be sent to you by email, and you will receive an email confirmation from us once the transfer has been completed. You will then be able to manage your domain and update your nameservers from your Client Area.

When you transfer your domain registration, you are also automatically adding one year to your domain’s expiration date. For example, if your domain expires in 2020, its expiry date will be in 2021 after your transfer. This ensures that you do not lose any of the time you already paid for your domain with another provider.

If you have any additional questions about your domain’s transfer, please get in touch with our friendly support team for immediate assistance.
Privacy Protection is a security service that helps protect your private information on the Internet. When registering any new domain, registration authorities require you to submit your personal information including your name, email, phone number, and full address. This information is then made public on the WHOIS database, a massive collection of all registered domains and their owners, intended to provide transparency on the Internet. Unfortunately, this database is nowadays used by spammers, hackers, and identity thieves to spam your email, hack your website, or steal your identity. With Privacy Protection all your private information is automatically hidden and replaced with that of the Privacy Protection service, effectively hiding all your personal information from prying eyes and protecting your inbox for unwanted spam. Privacy Protection is available for a small yearly supplement, and can be requested during your new domain’s order process, or added from your Client Area. It’s strongly recommended for all new domain registrations, and is included for free with .CA domains.
DNS (Domain Name System) is a technology that powers the backbone of the internet, allowing the mapping of domain names to servers that hold the data of your website and email. Before someone can reach your website, they need to communicate with the DNS servers to obtain the actual location of your website’s data. Traditional DNS servers are physically located in fixed locations around the world, often thousands of kilometers from your website visitor’s location. This causes an additional delay before you or your clients can reach your website.

With Anycast DNS technology, your website’s DNS information is automatically copied to dozens of locations around the world (instead of just one), allowing your clients to automatically fetch the information from the location that’s closest to them, thus improving your website’s initial load time.

Web Hosting Canada’s Anycast DNS system has been built from the ground up with Canadians in mind, and includes 10 points of presence in Canada alone, to ensure the fastest possible domain resolution times for you and your clients. There are also points of presence in Europe, Asia, and the US, to make sure even those halfway around the world get near-instant access to your website!

Anycast DNS is included with our Canadian Web Hosting or can be activated by ordering the Domain Manager PRO addon for your domain.
Your domain names can easily be managed from your Client Area. You’ll be able to:
  • Update your nameservers
  • Manage your advanced DNS settings (A Record, CNAME, TXT and MX)
  • Manage URL Forwarders
  • Update your WHOIS Contact Information
  • Manage Privacy Protection
  • Manage your Domain Lock
With the Domain Manager PRO addon, you can also take advantage of premium features:
Here are just a few reasons:
  • Free features with every domain, including URL forwarding, DNS Hosting, DNS Record Management and Domain Locking
  • Useful low-cost addons like Privacy Protection, Email forwarding and DNS Anycast technology to speed up domain name resolution time worldwide.
  • Easily connect a new website, blog, or professional email on your new domain through our intuitive Client Area.
  • The lowest prices in the industry. Pay in Canadian dollars and save up to 40% over competitors charging in USD!
  • 24/7 assistance from real experts, by phone, email, and live chat
  • Increased trust and offered by a CIRA-accredited registrar that manages tens of thousands of domains every day.

Monetize your blog

6 ways to monetize your blog

Can you make money with your blog? You sure can!

As you already know, there are many reasons to have a blog for your business. Nowadays, many people create a blog in order to monetize it. Of course, it doesn't happen overnight. On the contrary, making a blog profitable requires time and energy.

Starting a blog today doesn't mean you'll be ready to monetize it tomorrow - it'll have to gain some notoriety first. However, it’s still a good idea to start thinking about it!

How can you make money from your blog? We outline 6 ways of doing this below. Each of these require varying levels of involvement or work.

Why should you monetize your blog?

It's very simple: if you're going to write and invest time in your blog, why not make it profitable?

Monetizing your blog will allow you to:

  • Make the most of your time
  • Have passive income
  • Develop partnerships that will give your blog greater credibility and visibility
  • Eventually, make a living from your blog

How is this possible in practice?

1. Affiliate marketing

You may have already heard of affiliate marketing. This strategy involves embedding an affiliate link on your site for a product or service related to your niche. For example, if you’re writing a blog about insurance, you probably won't include affiliate links for buying dog food… unless you’re coming up with wildly creative connections!

Affiliate link: This is a type of link that redirects to a website. The special feature of this link is that it is equipped with a tracking cookie, which can directly recognize the web origin of a user (from one site to another). Once you sign up for an affiliate program and the link is placed on your site, the cookie can recognize that a user is moving from your site to another. This technology makes it possible to know if a user who buys a product comes from your site.

Then, if your readers click on the affiliate link and purchase the product or service in question, you’ll receive a commission, as specified in your agreement with the partner company.

The success of this method depends on the real interest your target audience has for the product or service in question. Of course, we suggest that you select your partners carefully: you wouldn't want to promote shady products on your blog!

A good example of affiliate marketing is the WHC affiliate program: you can become an affiliate and link to our site. When your visitors purchase one of our services, you get compensated financially. Cool, right?

The upside: No investment required! It's very simple, as you don't have any inventory to manage. It’s passive income – you integrate the link and it works for you!

The downside: This method is only profitable if you have enough traffic.

2. Ad placements

While surfing the web, you’ve probably encountered those banner ads that slow down your browser. These were probably banners displayed by Google Adsense or other alternatives, such as media.net or Amazon's affiliate marketing program.

Unfortunately, you don't have control over the ads, but generally speaking, media placement sites do a good job of targeting your readers' needs.

The upside: Very easy to set up: you only have to integrate a code into your website. No need to contact customers or partners.

The downside: As mentioned, ads can make your site heavy and unpleasant for visitors. The user experience becomes less interesting for your readers, especially on mobile. The content to be read gets lost in all the advertising spaces. And once again, you'll need a lot of traffic to make this method profitable.

3. Merch and promotional items

Do you want your brand to catch on? Why not make and sell products displaying your brand? Anything from mugs to pencils and shirts with your logo on them is fair game.

If you have a gardening blog, you might want to sell gardening tools or consider writing an ebook on how to start a vegetable garden. Obviously, this method requires an investment of time and money, but it will help you gain visibility.

The upside: Merch and infoproducts allow you to create an attachment to your blog in addition to giving you great publicity.

The downside: Creating infoproducts and managing item orders will require more time and money than other passive income methods.

A swimwear company contacts you and offers to send you two or three swimsuits from their new collection, so that you can present them to your readers via an article. This would be a good idea if your target audience is young women who like to travel!

In this case, you'd create a sponsored post featuring a product or service from a company that wants to use your blog as a showcase. The company will typically give you a one-time fee to take advantage of your traffic. Some companies may try to just send you products, without any money involved. It's up to you to decide whether to simply accept the gifts or whether to monetize the opportunity.

Obviously, if you opt for a sponsorship strategy so closely related to influencer marketing, it’s important at the very top of the article to always mention that it is a sponsored partnership.

The upside: It allows you to discover and try out new products!

The downside: It can be difficult to give positive reviews that are also nuanced and honest. Ideally, make sure to feature only products or services that you really like.

5. Membership Plan

Why not create a VIP area on your blog that would allow you to generate money? There are many ways to do this: you just need to use your creativity to make it profitable. For instance, you could offer…

  • Exclusive access to a Facebook group
  • A subscription to your Patreon account
  • A free tool every month

You could even take it a step further and offer consulting, or sell online courses related to the topic of your blog. If you have a particular expertise, this could be turned into a full-time business!

The upside: The possibilities are almost endless. Not only will you generate money, but who knows where it could lead? Could be the beginning of a successful business!

The downside: You’ll have to be convincing so that your users take out their wallets. Indeed, why pay when there’s already a free information base? It’s up to you to think strategically.

6. Donations and fundraising campaigns

Did you know that not only charitable organizations are allowed to integrate donation forms on their website? In fact, you can also do it on your blog! With WordPress, you can easily integrate the WP donation extension – and voilà!

Are you just starting your project? Why not launch a crowdfunding campaign like on Gofundme? You could offer those supporters who participate in the campaign a VIP space on your blog, or a promotional item or infoproduct, as mentioned above. We encourage you to have different levels of products to offer, depending on the investment. For example, a person who donates $10 will get a VIP space, while a person who donates $50 will get the VIP space and a T-shirt. Be creative!

Finally, have you heard of the Buy me a coffee website? This platform allows people to donate money to different creators they like: musicians, bloggers, writers, etc. You have nothing to lose by signing up!

The upside: Collecting donations builds reader loyalty: if they donate money, it means they like your content! And if they want to continue consuming the content you offer on your blog, they know the donations are worth the cost.

The downside: This is a passive income method that will require patience. Why would people give you money when there are so many free blogs out there?

So now, how will you monetize your blog?

Of course, as you can imagine, there are many other ways to monetize your blog: creating podcasts, using influencers, etc. You can combine these various strategies, but be careful not to try to do everything! Not only will you burn yourself out, but you'll also get lost amongst all these different approaches. We encourage you to pick two or three, and maximize these. Try to choose, for example, two passive methods and one that requires more time. After that, don't forget to develop a digital strategy to drive traffic to your site!

Whenever possible, draw up a contract when you collaborate with partners. This is actually quite essential, and can save you a lot of legal trouble down the road.

Now that you’ve started your blog, start thinking about your monetization strategy, but be realistic: you won't wake up a millionaire tomorrow morning!

Introducing PHP X-ray! A new performance monitoring tool you can use to identify issues and improve the performance of your website.

We are happy to announce that PHP X-ray is now available for free with all our Web Hosting and Reseller Hosting plans.

Read on to learn how this can help you…

What is PHP X-Ray?

PHP X-Ray is a tool for websites that use CMSs such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. You can use it to scan your website for issues such as resource-heavy plugins, database queries, functions, or external calls which can slow your website down.

With PHP X-Ray, you’re no longer forced to diagnose these problems by hand, as it will produce a detailed report of any performance bottlenecks at the click of a button. It’ll give recommendations on how to resolve any found issues so you can improve your website performance!

Who should use PHP X-ray?

If you have strong technical know-how and you’re looking for a way to easily diagnose issues with your website, PHP X-ray is a great solution! It’ll help you to resolve problems yourself which can save you both time and the expense of hiring a web developer.

There are a multitude of reasons why a website could be performing poorly, such as:

  • Render-blocking JavaScript code
  • Slow or outdated plugins
  • Excessive database overhead or too many queries
  • External calls to servers that are slow to respond
  • Non-optimized CSS
To learn more about common web performance issues, see What is website performance and why is it important?

When issues such as these aren’t resolved, they can negatively affect your SEO, site traffic, and eventually your business. It’s always a great idea to watch for these kinds of problems and keep your website working to its full potential.

So if you suspect your website is running slowly, why not give PHP X-Ray a try?

How can I get started?

PHP X-Ray makes finding what’s causing issues on your site very easy!

If you have a Web Hosting or Reseller Hosting plan, you can find this tool right within cPanel.

Simply log in to your cPanel, and click the PHP X-Ray App icon:

PHP Xray UI

Then click on the Start Tracing button to analyze your website:

PHP Xray UI

Make sure to add an asterisk ("*") to the 'Specify Mask' field, to scan your entire website.

After your site has been analyzed, you’ll be able to view a report detailing any found issues.

For example, if you’re running a WordPress website, PHP X-Ray might identify a plugin that uses a lot of resources. In this case, the solution would be to disable the plugin (if it's not required), and then re-run the test. You’ll see that the problem has been resolved & you’ll likely find that your website loads much faster as a result!

Note: PHP X-Ray is also available with our Dedicated Servers by purchasing the CloudLinux Shared PRO option.

In conclusion

PHP X-Ray is a very useful tool you can use to keep your website running smoothly. If you’re looking for a way to speed up your website and boost your performance — be sure to try it out for yourself!
